Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 09, we dive into part 2 of our birth story. We share the details of how we went from a VBAC friendly doctor to a home birth midwife to in the end having an unassisted home birth. We were faced with spiritual warfare and doubts, but in the end, YHWH won!

NOTE: possible trigger warning as we will discuss c-sections, birth trauma, and medical procedures.

In This Episode on Spiritual Warfare in Birth: Unassisted Home Birth with Michael Twomey:

  • Take Two
    • The Lord had laid it on my heart that we would have more children
    • I found YHWH in this pain and experience
    • When we got pregnant a second time, I prayed for the Lord to show us the way
      • He led us down new paths
      • Led to books to become educated about birth
      • Biggest lesson: pain can often be our biggest lesson. Through this He revealed to me how amazing these bodies are that he created.
      • Our bodies are not broken, they are not lemons. He created our bodies to grow babies and give birth to them.
    • C-Section rates in America are at 30-60%
      • OBs are trained surgeons
      • OBs do what is best for them and their own liability
    • We prayed for God to lead us to the right decision
      • He said we are going to have the baby naturally at home
      • I still went to an OB, a VBAC specialist. Felt the Lord saying “what are you doing here?” every time I would go
      • Sought a home birth midwife
      • Got chiropractic care
      • Hired a doula
      • Learned about birth
        • Knew we couldn’t just replace doctors with a midwife, we needed to educate ourselves on birth
        • Read Ina May Gaskin’s book (minus the first section with birth stories as I did not want to add stories while working through birth trauma)
        • Took the Hypnobabies course on birth and listened to tracks (aside: not diving into New Age in this episode)
          • Rewrote my mental scripts on birth
          • Learning to surrendering to birth and what God created the body to do
          • Fetal Ejection Reflex (FER) – the uterus pushing the baby down and out
        • Read Home Birth on Your Own Terms
        • Drank LOTS of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
        • Enzymes from pineapple and dates can also help prepare for birth
        • Saw prodromal labor as productive
      • Was sent to have my c-section scar checked. Was cleared, but the OBs office called my midwife and instilled fear
      • Our doula reminded us that “the Lord us with us.” She was a calming peace and reminded us that we were in partnership with the Lord
      • We are ambassadors of Christ
      • Joined home birth/unassisted home birth groups on Facebook and learned more about birth and varying scenarios and to trust the Lord
      • Learned about God’s medicine: herbs and plants
        • Research the power of dandelions!
      • Midwife backed out, we partnered with God and each other and moved forward with an unassisted home birth
    • Spiritual Birth
      • The Lord convicting me to have a home birth and saying “do you trust me?” every step of the way. He promised I was healed and He would keep me safe.
      • Spiritual warfare
        • Discovered something—a breach of trust
        • Called Rachel, she saw that it was an attack on our marriage, an attempt to destroy our trust in an important time. She encouraged me to see it for what it was and extend pre-forgiveness and trust to get through our birthing time
        • Anointed our doorways
        • Lesson from male perspective: the enemy looks to seek and destroy. He tempts you in to then destroy you in the end.
        • Soul ties, there is a war for our souls
      • Physiological birth is beautiful!
      • God is bigger than our trauma, he is bigger than our fears, he is bigger than birth, he is bigger than medical procedures.
      • Trusting him even when it’s hard or inconvenient or the world is telling us NOT to is where our true faith lies
      • My mission is not to tell everyone to have a home birth, my mission is to encourage you to listen to the Lord. If he has placed a seed of doubt inside if you about how hospitals handle birth, water that seed with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Bible Verses Mentioned:

Psalm 139:13-18

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.”

1 Corinthians 1:30-31

“You are partners with Christ Jesus because of God. Jesus has become our wisdom sent from God, our approval, our holiness, and our ransom from sin. As Scripture says, “Whoever brags must brag about what the Lord has done.”

Matthew 15:21-28

Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.”

James 1:6

“But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

Hebrews 11:11

“And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.”

Matthew 17:30

“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
