Rockefeller, Pharmakeia & the Rise of Modern Medicine: How Deception Shaped Healthcare

Why is our healthcare system driven by profit instead of healing? Why are natural remedies dismissed as “unscientific” while synthetic drugs are celebrated?
To answer that, we have to go back to the early 1900s—to John D. Rockefeller and the birth of modern medicine.

The Industrial Shift to Petrochemicals

By the turn of the 20th century, Rockefeller had already built a massive oil monopoly through Standard Oil, controlling nearly 90 percent of U.S. refineries. But oil wasn’t just for fuel—it became the basis for a new industry: petrochemicals.

Scientists began creating synthetic compounds from oil, and by 1935, Vitamin C had been artificially synthesized in a lab for the first time. Rockefeller saw his opportunity—he could replace God-made nutrients with lab-made alternatives and profit from both the disease and the “cure.”

The Flexner Report & the Erasure of Natural Medicine

At the time, America had a diverse medical landscape: herbalists, naturopaths, homeopaths, and chiropractors practiced alongside conventional doctors. Rockefeller knew that to control medicine, he needed to eliminate competition.

He commissioned Abraham Flexner to create a report for Congress in 1910 criticizing non-allopathic schools as “unscientific quackery.” Backed by Rockefeller and Carnegie funding, the report pushed for standardized medical education under the American Medical Association.

Overnight, natural medicine was erased. Medical schools closed unless they taught drug-based, surgery-centric medicine. Herbal and dietary education vanished from curricula.

The Birth of the Pharmaceutical Monopoly

Rockefeller purchased shares of the German company I.G. Farben—later infamous for its role in WWII chemical warfare. He funded medical research that focused on patentable, oil-derived drugs while launching a media campaign to label natural healing as dangerous and unscientific.

Doctors using homeopathy or herbs were arrested. Magazines and newspapers smeared them as charlatans. And from that moment on, the American public was trained to believe that a pill for an ill was the only valid form of medicine.

Rockefeller’s Global Agenda

Rockefeller’s influence didn’t stop in the U.S. He extended his reach to China through the Rockefeller Foundation and the China Medical Board in 1914, investing millions to “modernize” medicine and replace Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western practices. Though his efforts failed to fully eradicate TCM, his goal was clear—a worldwide medical monopoly.

The Spirit of Pharmakeia

Revelation 18:23 warns, “By your sorcery (pharmakeia) all nations were deceived.” This isn’t just about drugs—it’s about systems of deception that profit from pain and hide truth.

When healing becomes a business, human suffering becomes currency. What Rockefeller created was more than an industry—it was a global mechanism of dependence, a spiritual bondage that discourages faith in God’s design for the body.

The Modern Legacy

Today’s medical system still bears Rockefeller’s fingerprints:

  • Pharmaceutical funding dominates medical education.
  • Holistic practices are dismissed as “alternative.”
  • Cancer laws restrict treatment to chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.
  • Medical costs rank #1 in the world, while quality ranks #37.

These outcomes were by design—not accident.

A Biblical Response

Ephesians 5:11 commands, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”
Learning this history isn’t about fear—it’s about discernment. We cannot fix what we don’t see.

God created our bodies with intrinsic wisdom to heal, restore, and thrive. The enemy counterfeits that design through systems that enslave and distract. But followers of Christ are called to seek truth, not convenience.
