Who is God? | The Radiant Mission Podcast Ep 134

Who is God? This question has been asked for centuries and is at the very core of faith. Understanding who God is shapes our worldview, identity, and relationship with Him. In this blog, we explore who God is, His character, His name, and why knowing Him personally is so important.

Who Is God and What Is His Character?

The Bible describes God as loving, just, merciful, and sovereign. He is not just a distant Creator but a personal God who desires a relationship with us.

God’s Attributes in Scripture

📖 Loving & Merciful“The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” (Psalm 145:8)
📖 Holy & Just“There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” (1 Samuel 2:2)
📖 All-Powerful & Sovereign“For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.” (Isaiah 46:9)

God is also described as omniscient (all-knowing), omnipotent (all-powerful), and omnipresent (ever-present). His divine nature surpasses human understanding, yet He invites us to know Him intimately through His Word.

Who Is God? His Name Revealed as Yahweh (YHWH)

Did you know that God has a personal name? In the Bible, God reveals Himself as Yahweh (YHWH), which means “I AM” or “The Self-Existent One.”

📖 “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.’”(Exodus 3:14)

Over time, out of reverence, the Jewish people stopped pronouncing this name and used titles like “Lord” (Adonai). In English translations of the Bible, Yahweh is often replaced with “LORD” in all capital letters.

Why God’s Name Matters

Knowing God’s name reminds us of His eternal nature and His personal relationship with humanity. Unlike impersonal deities of other belief systems, Yahweh is a God who sees, hears, and acts on behalf of His people (Exodus 3:7-8).

A Fascinating Connection: Yahweh and Our Breath

Some scholars believe the pronunciation of “YHWH” resembles the sound of breathing, symbolizing that every breath we take is a reminder of God’s presence. From our first breath to our last, we are constantly speaking His name.

A Possible Connection in DNA

Another intriguing theory suggests that the structure of our DNA may reflect God’s name. Some researchers believe that molecular patterns in our DNA align with the numerical values of YHWH in Hebrew, reinforcing the idea that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

Who Is God? Common Misconceptions

Many people see God as either distant, judgmental, or only a wish-granter. However, the Bible shows us a God who is actively involved in our lives, deeply loving, and righteous.

Common Misconceptions About God

God is distant and uninvolved – Truth: God is near to those who seek Him (James 4:8).
God is only loving, not just – Truth: God is both loving and just; He cannot ignore sin (Romans 3:26).
God is a cosmic genie – Truth: God calls us into relationship, not just to grant wishes (Matthew 6:33).

📖 “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)
Jesus, who is God in the flesh, reveals God’s true nature—full of grace and truth, yet holy and just.

Why Knowing Who God Is Matters

Understanding who God is changes everything. If God is just a distant force, life feels empty. But if He is a personal, loving Father, then we find purpose, identity, and security in Him.

How Knowing God Transforms Us

  • Knowing God helps us trust Him in difficult times.
  • Understanding His love gives us confidence in our worth.
  • Recognizing His justice calls us to live with integrity.
  • Growing in faith deepens our personal relationship with Him.

📖 Key Verse for Reflection:
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”Proverbs 18:10

Final Thoughts

Who is God? He is our Creator, Father, Savior, and Sustainer. He has revealed Himself through His Word, through Jesus, and even in the way we breathe. Take time today to seek Him—He promises that those who seek will find.
