In Episode 19 we continue the conversation with special guest, Paula Carper. She is a registered dietician and expert on women’s hormones. In today’s episode we discuss supplements, toxic diet culture, the microbiome, transforming health, and healing.

In This Episode on Our Bodies Are Miracles: Supplements, Toxic Diet Culture, & Healing with Paula Carper:

  • Vitamins, Minerals, & Supplements
    • When we take vitamin C, we’re taking ascorbic acid. Whole food vitamin C will certainly be best, as with any supplement.
    • However, it’s important to be aware that taking any supplement, even naturally, in high doses without context, isn’t always what’s best for our bodies.
  • Toxic Diet Culture
    • The diet culture and health and fitness industry often promote a one-size-fits-all attitude.
    • We tend to equate weight loss with health. This is because we’re being marketed to. When we step away from that merry go round, we can recognize the enemy in toxic diet culture. The reality is that we’re playing someone else’s game. We can step back and say “what game do I want to play? What’s the drum beat I want to march to?” This is where Paula is passionate. Helping women find their own way. Women are often told what to do and not to listen to their own intuition.
    • BMI was invented by a statistician as a way to gather data, it was never meant to be used as a barometer of health. This attitude keeps women stuck.
  • The Liver & the Stomach Microbiome
    • There is so much data that’s come out about the microbiome. We know that there is a lot of diversity in the microbiome. It’s about restoring restoring balance. In general, it can take 6-12 months, with 9-12 months minimum to truly restore gut dysbiosis and other issues.
    • Your overall environment, sleep, stress, and other factors can influence the microbiome. Our overall environment is really upside down and completely different from the environment we were intended to live in (a garden). How our bodies interact with that impacts our overall health. Illnesses, chronic illnesses, traumas, stress, and more.
    • God made our bodies to heal. We are currently in a fallen world and while we’re in this fallen state, it’s impacted our food, lifestyles, stress levels, ability to be out in the outdoor environment He created. The keys are there, we just have to find them because He designed us to miraculously heal and thrive.
    • Rest is important. Circadian training, the benefits of sunlight, and being in sync with nature helps our bodies behave the way it was meant to behave.
  • Transforming Health
    • The most important thing someone can do to transform their own health is to sit down and take an inventory of their lifestyle: what they eat, when, how they live, sleep, etc. Women have such strong intuition about their own health, listening and trusting that intuition is important. Taking back ownership is the best place to start.
    • When it comes to medical care, seek until you find someone that will listen to you. Someone that you can trust. Someone willing to listen to what you think the problem is. Our intuition and the voice of the Lord is our best guide.
    • As believers, the Lord gave us our intuition for a reason.
  • Paula’s Journey to Health
    • She became anxious about doing things perfectly and realized she needed to make a decision to do what she could. Becoming anxious was actually not good for her and she realized that God is in charge of our healing. We can eat well, we can live in ways that please God, we can have positive and supportive relationships, but ultimately healing is in God’s hands.
    • Paula says, “I don’t heal you; your body heals and ultimate God is our healer.”
    • Our body has the ability to heal because God created it that way.
    • We build health, and that’s when we lose weight. If you’re struggling to lose weight, it’s a symptom. There’s a lack of balance in meal composition—that’s the most important thing we can do to improve our diets. A protein-forward plate is a great place to start. Animal-based protein is very important for women.

Bible Verses Mentioned:

3 John 1:2

“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
