Is Satan Real? Exposing the Enemy and Understanding Spiritual Warfare | TRM Podcast Ep 138

Is Satan real? This question might sound old-fashioned in today’s world, but it’s more relevant than ever. As Christians, we’re called to be alert and discerning. The Bible paints a very clear picture: Satan is real, active, and strategic. While culture often turns him into a joke or a costume, Scripture reveals him as a cunning enemy whose goal is to deceive, divide, and destroy.

In this blog, we’ll explore what the Bible says about Satan’s identity, his rebellion, his role in the world, and how to stand firm against his schemes through spiritual warfare.

Who Is Satan According to the Bible?

Many people are surprised to learn that Satan was originally created as a powerful angelic being. He was described as full of beauty and wisdom. But pride led to his downfall.

📖 “You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty… You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.” – Ezekiel 28:12, 15
📖 “I will ascend to the heavens… I will make myself like the Most High.” – Isaiah 14:13–14

Satan wasn’t content to serve God—he wanted to be God. Because of that rebellion, he was cast out of heaven. Revelation 12:4 says that a third of the angels followed him in this rebellion. These fallen angels now work against God’s people.

Is the Serpent in the Garden Satan?

Yes. The serpent who tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden is Satan. While Genesis 3 doesn’t name him outright, Revelation 12:9 removes all doubt:

📖 “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray…”

From the very beginning, Satan’s strategy has been deception. He twisted God’s words, sowed doubt, and led humanity into sin.

Why Did Satan Still Have Access to Heaven?

Even after his fall, Satan continued to appear in heaven as an accuser. In Job 1:6, we see him standing before God and accusing Job. Revelation 12:10 calls him “the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night.”

But Revelation 12 also describes a time when Satan is permanently cast out of heaven—likely after Jesus’ death and resurrection. At that point, Satan was confined to earth, and his access to heaven ended.

The Watchers, Nephilim, and the Roots of Spiritual Warfare

Genesis 6:1–4 speaks of “the sons of God” taking human wives and producing offspring known as the Nephilim. Many scholars and ancient sources interpret these “sons of God” as fallen angels, sometimes called the Watchers.

This rebellion wasn’t just about pride—it was a full-blown assault on God’s creation. These angels abandoned their heavenly positions (Jude 1:6) and created a corrupted race of giants.

God responded with the flood, preserving Noah and his family, who were described as “blameless in their generations.” But what happened to the Nephilim?

Demons: The Disembodied Spirits of the Nephilim?

Though the Nephilim’s bodies were destroyed, many believe their spirits became demons—unclean spirits that now roam the earth. These spirits seek to inhabit and oppress humans.

📖 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.” – Luke 11:24

This view explains the distinction between fallen angels and demons:

  • Fallen angels are powerful spiritual beings who followed Satan.
  • Demons are disembodied spirits of the Nephilim, seeking embodiment.

Both play a role in spiritual warfare.

What Is Satan Doing Today?

The Bible is clear: Satan is still active.

📖 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy…” – John 10:10

He works through:

  • Lies that sound like truth
  • Temptations that look like freedom
  • Twisting Scripture or denying it altogether
  • Creating fear, confusion, or pride

He is described as:

  • The tempter (Matthew 4:3)
  • The accuser (Revelation 12:10)
  • The father of lies (John 8:44)
  • The god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4)

How Do We Fight Back?

We don’t fight spiritual battles with worldly weapons. Ephesians 6 tells us to put on the full armor of God:

  • Truth (belt)
  • Righteousness (breastplate)
  • Peace (shoes)
  • Faith (shield)
  • Salvation (helmet)
  • The Word of God (sword)
  • Prayer

📖 “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7
📖 “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” – 1 John 4:4

Victory belongs to Jesus—and through Him, we walk in authority.

Final Thoughts: Is Satan Real?

Yes. Satan is not a symbol, myth, or metaphor. He is a real enemy with a real strategy. But Jesus has already overcome him.

📖 “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” – Romans 16:20
📖 “[Jesus] disarmed the powers and authorities… triumphing over them by the cross.” – Colossians 2:15

Stay alert. Stay anchored in Scripture. And stand firm in the truth.

Reflection Questions

  1. Do I treat Satan as a real enemy—or do I underestimate his influence?
  2. How have I seen deception at work in the world around me?
  3. What part of the armor of God do I need to strengthen in my life right now?
  4. Am I resisting the enemy with truth—or entertaining his lies?
