Involving Children in Birth with Chyna Green | TRM Podcast Ep. 70

Our latest podcast episode with guest Chyna Green was a rich tapestry of personal experiences, storytelling, and research. We delved into the controversial topic of involving children in the birth process, challenging societal norms and perceptions around childbirth.

Chyna, a mother of two and advocate for natural birth, shared her personal experiences with unmedicated water birth and unassisted home birth. The conversation extended to how these experiences helped her children understand and appreciate the birth process. She shed light on how this approach challenged societal norms, breaking down barriers and presenting birth as a natural, transformative process.

We also discussed the transition into sibling-hood. Preparing older children for the arrival of a new sibling is an important aspect of the process. This could include getting them a baby doll to care for, emphasizing the importance of involving them in the birth to help them understand and appreciate the process. It’s all about normalizing birth for children, reshaping their views on childbirth as they grow up.

Involving Children in Birth

One significant point of discussion was the shift in perception needed to normalize birth for children. This means questioning why it has become taboo to have children present during birth and highlighting the benefits of witnessing this transformative experience. It was highlighted how experiences from birth could inspire children to pursue careers in the birth field.

Creating a support system for the child during labor was another vital topic discussed. This system would allow the mother to focus on giving birth, making the process more comfortable and less stressful. Practical tips were provided on preparing children for this life-changing event and the positive effects it can have on their understanding and involvement in the birthing process.

Finally, the conversation rounded off with insights on balancing work and motherhood while prioritizing self-care. Chyna emphasized the importance of parenting in alignment with our values and beliefs. She reminded us of the importance of setting boundaries and the impact of social media on parenting.

The overarching theme of the episode was to challenge societal norms and embrace the beauty and power of birth. By including children in the birth process, we not only empower them but also empower ourselves as parents. As Chyna Green put it, “it’s a beautiful and significant aspect of life that should be celebrated and shared.”
