In This Episode on Breastfeeding Tips & Advice:

We are joined by IBCLC, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, Sarah Knapek.

She shares her best breastfeeding tips and the different types of lactation consultants. This includes: International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC), Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS), and Certified Lactation Educator (CLE).

What is something repeat moms might not know about breastfeeding that can be a game changer? If a mom struggles to breastfeed with her first, will she always struggle?

Every baby is different! They are all unique. While the first might pose certain issues, subsequent babies might not.

Go into each birth and baby with an open mind. Prepare ahead of time with your resources lined up. Meet with your chosen lactation consultant in advance so you’re prepared ahead of time. They can help with resources, breast pump set up, what to look for when it comes to oral ties, and which products might be helpful (bottles, breastfeeding pillows, etc.).

How do you feel about breast pumps? Do you have a recommendation for when they should be used? Should a mom establish her supply first before introducing a pump?

Wireless pumps can be very helpful but should not be the primary pump. Wireless pumps are great for on the go. A mom with a low supply or trying to maintain supply should go for an at-home plug in pump like the Medela, Spectra, Motif Luna, etc.

Waiting to pump might not be for everyone. If there are latch struggles, it’s important to get the milk out of mom.

Do you have any thoughts on haakaas? Like them? Love them? Don’t like them?

They are great tools in the beginning as your supply is being regulated. A Haakaa can help to collect the excess let down.

However, if they are overused, they can sometimes cause problems with oversupply. If your body is working off of supply and demand, it can signal your body to produce more than it needs.

What is something all first-time moms should know about breastfeeding before baby arrives?

Give yourself grace. Go into knowing that you are not a failure for however you decide to feed your baby. No matter how you choose to feed your baby, an IBCLC is there to support you.

It’s not breast is best or fed is best. Support is best!

Having your support team ready ahead of time is so important.

Bible Verses Mentioned on Breastfeeding Tips & Advice:

1 Corinthians 13:

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
