Are Demons Real? Understanding the Unseen Battle at Work Today | TRM Podcast Ep 139

Are demons real? That may sound like a question from ancient times, but it’s just as important today. In a culture that often treats the devil as a cartoon or myth, we’re left wondering—how much of the spiritual world is real, and how much have we been conditioned to ignore?

As Christians, we know the Bible doesn’t shy away from this topic. Scripture speaks clearly about the reality of demons, their origin, their tactics, and how we, as believers, are called to resist them. In this article, based on Episode 139 of The Radiant Mission Podcast, we’ll unpack the biblical truth behind this question and explore the very real spiritual warfare at work around us.

Are Demons Real? Understanding Their Origin

The Bible describes demons as unclean spirits or evil spirits—not metaphors, but literal spiritual beings. Many scholars believe they are the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim, the hybrid offspring of fallen angels and human women from Genesis 6.

After the flood destroyed the Nephilim physically, their spirits remained. These spirits became restless and hostile, seeking to oppress and deceive.

📖 Luke 11:24 tells us:
“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.”

This hunger for a physical host is a signature trait of demons throughout Scripture. From the Gadarene pigs in Matthew 8 to the boy with seizures in Mark 9, demons clearly prefer embodiment—and their influence can be devastating.

What the Bible Says About Demons

Demons appear throughout Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments:

  • In the Old Testament, idolatry and child sacrifice were often linked to demons.
📖 Psalm 106:37 says, “They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.”
📖 Deuteronomy 18:10–12 warns against sorcery, divination, and communicating with the dead.
  • In the New Testament, Jesus cast out demons regularly.
📖 Mark 1:34 – “He healed many who were sick… and cast out many demons.”

Demons are shown to cause physical ailments, mental torment, deception, and destruction. Their activity was undeniable then—and it still is today.

How Demons Operate Today

In modern Western culture, demonic influence often hides behind the scenes. Instead of dramatic possession, demons work through:

  • False teachings and new-age spirituality
  • Addictions and compulsions
  • Fear, confusion, and emotional oppression
  • Unforgiveness and unresolved trauma
  • Entertainment that glorifies darkness

📖 1 Timothy 4:1 warns:
“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.”

Demons and Pharmakeia: Spiritual Deception Through Substances

The Bible uses the word pharmakeia (from which we get the word pharmacy) to describe something far more sinister than medication—it’s tied to sorcery and deception.

📖 Galatians 5:20 lists pharmakeia as a work of the flesh.
📖 Revelation 18:23 says, “All nations were deceived by your sorcery [pharmakeia].”

In the ancient world, potions and hallucinogens were used in rituals to summon spirits. Even today, certain substances are used to “contact spirit guides”—but these are not harmless entities. They are demonic.

While not every pill is evil, any mind-altering substance that opens the door to spiritual influence outside of God must be approached with wisdom and prayer.

📖 1 Peter 5:8 urges us to be sober-minded and alert—because the enemy is looking for open doors.

Demons and Parasites: A Physical–Spiritual Parallel?

Many have observed that demons behave like spiritual parasites. The similarities are striking:

  • Parasites feed off a host silently at first, gradually weakening it.
  • They often go unnoticed while draining life and energy.
  • They can affect mood, behavior, and even thoughts—especially gut-brain parasites.
  • They thrive in dark, toxic, and unclean environments.

Likewise:

  • Demons seek to inhabit and influence people.
  • They often operate through deception and secrecy.
  • They attach themselves to areas of spiritual darkness, sin, and trauma.
  • Deliverance ministry often reports physical symptoms during expulsion—similar to detoxing parasites.

While not a direct biblical teaching, this parallel reminds us that our physical and spiritual health are deeply connected.

Can Christians Be Possessed by Demons?

The short answer? No—true believers cannot be possessed.
If you are in Christ, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). The enemy cannot take ownership of what belongs to God.

But Christians can experience oppression, deception, or harassment—especially if we’ve opened spiritual doors through sin, trauma, or compromise.

📖 Ephesians 4:27 says, “Do not give the devil a foothold.”
Even saved believers must be vigilant, repentant, and prayerful.

How to Stand Firm Against Demons

You don’t need to live in fear. The Bible equips us to stand firm:

  • Submit to God – Surrender every area of your life to Him
  • Resist the enemy – Don’t give darkness a place to land
  • Put on the armor of God – Truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer
  • Stay in the light – Walk in forgiveness, repentance, and purity

📖 Luke 10:19 – “I have given you authority… to overcome all the power of the enemy.”
📖 James 4:7 – “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Jesus has already won. Through Him, you can walk in victory.

Final Thoughts

So, are demons real? Yes—and they are active. But they are defeated enemies.

As a believer in Christ, you carry the authority of His name, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the protection of God’s truth. You don’t need to fear what the enemy is doing—you simply need to stay alert, stay grounded, and stay close to Jesus.

📖 Romans 8:38–39 reminds us that nothing—not even demons—can separate us from the love of God.
