What are angels, really? Are they winged beings playing harps, or powerful spiritual warriors with specific missions from God? In Episode 147 of The Radiant Mission Podcast, we explore what the Bible says about angels, uncovering truths that challenge popular portrayals and deepen our understanding of the spiritual realm.
From Genesis to Revelation, angels play a key role in God’s plan. They deliver messages, protect God’s people, wage war against evil, and even offer guidance during pivotal moments. But there’s much more to these heavenly beings than most people realize.
What Are Angels According to the Bible?
Angels are created beings—not human, not divine, but powerful spiritual messengers of God. The word “angel” comes from the Greek word angelos, meaning “messenger.” They operate in a dimension we can’t always see, but their impact is very real. Scripture offers dozens of examples, from Gabriel’s announcement to Mary to the army of angels in Revelation.
Many passages suggest that angels are often invisible but can appear visibly when God permits. Hebrews 13:2 even encourages us to show hospitality to strangers, noting that “some have entertained angels unawares.” This reminds us that angels sometimes walk among us without being noticed.
Are Angels Invisible?
While angels are typically unseen, they can become visible. There are biblical accounts of angels appearing in radiant form or even disguised as ordinary men. In 2 Kings 6:17, Elisha prayed that his servant’s eyes would be opened, and suddenly the servant saw the hills filled with angelic warriors.
So yes, angels are often invisible to the human eye—but they are very real and active.
Do We Each Have a Guardian Angel?
Many Christians wonder: Do I have a personal guardian angel? While the Bible doesn’t say each individual has a named guardian, there are Scriptures that suggest angels are assigned to protect and watch over believers. Psalm 91:11 says, “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” And in Matthew 18:10, Jesus says of children, “Their angels in heaven always see the face of My Father.”
These verses support the idea that angelic beings are assigned to guard and advocate for God’s people, especially the vulnerable.
Are Angels Like Demons?
While both angels and demons are spirits, their nature is completely opposite. Demons are fallen angels—beings who rebelled against God with Satan. Angels remain loyal to God and carry out His will. Both types of beings operate in the spiritual realm and can influence our world, but one leads to truth and protection, while the other leads to deception and destruction.
What Do Angels Look Like?
Pop culture often depicts angels with white robes and halos, but biblical descriptions are far more diverse—and at times, even intimidating. Some angels appear as glowing men in white; others have multiple wings, eyes, or faces (like the seraphim and cherubim in Isaiah 6 and Ezekiel 10). They are not all soft and cuddly. Many times, angels begin their appearances with, “Do not be afraid,” because their presence is awe-inspiring.
What Are Angels Doing Today?
Angels are still active today. They serve God’s purposes—protecting believers, executing judgment, delivering messages, and more. They are ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14). Their presence reminds us that we are never alone in the spiritual battle we face.
This episode invites you to step beyond cultural assumptions and into the spiritual reality that angels reveal. Understanding their purpose can strengthen our trust in God’s care and increase our awareness of the unseen realm around us.
